This live training will provide staff with information about the prevalence and impact of tobacco use among people with behavioral health conditions and the role of staff in engaging and treating people who use tobacco. This live training covers the following topics: prevalence and co-morbidity, understanding tobacco addiction neurobiology, clinical level change – incorporating assessment of tobacco dependence into current psychiatric evaluations and treatment plans, cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmacological treatments, peer support to address tobacco, role of motivational interviewing in tobacco dependence treatment, psychosocial treatment, tobacco control 101 (e-cigarettes and other tobacco, taxes, and policy), and motivational interviewing skills to help address tobacco use (e.g., eliciting change talk and responding to sustain/discord talk). Throughout, the training also highlights disparities in tobacco use and treatment and adaptations to address tobacco use within different communities.
